According to recent polling, one of the key reasons that parents delay childbearing or choose to have an abortion is due to financial insecurity. As evangelicals, we know the importance of family formation and want to support policies that ensure families have all that they need to flourish.
As major tax policies are being considered in Congress, which will have significant implications on the cost of family formation, Walter Kim, president of the National Association of Evangelicals, joined leaders of the pro-life community in calling on Congress to prioritize the needs of children and families in the upcoming reconciliation package.
In a letter addressed to Majority Leader John Thune, Speaker Mike Johnson, Senate Finance Chairman Mike Crapo, and House Ways and Means Chairman Jason Smith, 33 pro-life leaders asked members to prioritize:
- Expanding the Child Tax Credit (CTC);
- Extending paid family leave;
- Including a tax credit for pregnancy resource centers; and
- Providing immediate economic support to parents at the time of birth.
As part of the Blueprint for Life Coalition, the NAE is urging Congress to do what they can to create a culture where financial instability is not a hindrance to family formation. As the letter states, “When American families are strong, America is strong, and we can all look to a future full of hope and prosperity.”
