The U. S. Surgeon General and others have issued reports and findings with conclusive evidence showing that tobacco smoking is a health hazard and a major cause of lung cancer and other diseases. Recent research has also revealed the health hazard to non-smokers in areas filled with tobacco smoke.

Several commercial airlines have attempted to separate smokers from non-smokers in their seating arrangements. However, the experience of many who travel clearly indicates that this voluntary approach is neither effective nor enforceable. The airlines should have statutory authority to provide for the safety and welfare of those who do not wish to be subjected to the discomfort and danger of tobacco smoke.

The National Association of Evangelicals calls upon Congress to enact without delay legislation which would require the Secretary of Transportation to establish regulations for protected non-smoking areas in all public carriers operating in interstate commerce.
