As threats and violence targeting religious communities take place across the country, Congress can play a critical role in ensuring that faith-based communities have access to the training and resources they need to stay safe. The National Association of Evangelicals joined 22 diverse faith groups in urging congressional leadership to strengthen protections for religious institutions and houses of worship. 

In a letter to House and Senate leadership, the groups call on Congress to provide up to $1 billion in funding for the Nonprofit Security Grant Program (NSGP) and to pass the bipartisan Pray Safe Act (S.2947/H.R.5645). 

Established in 2004, the NSGP supports religious institutions facing security threats by providing grant funding for physical security improvements, such as reinforced doors and windows, locks and gates, as well as training. As violence against religious communities has increased, demand for these resources has increased. In FY2024, less than half (page 6) of eligible applicants received funding. 

Similarly, the Pray Safe Act would further strengthen these efforts by creating a federal clearinghouse for best security practices, giving access to critical resources to improve their security preparedness. 

The NAE has long supported the right to religious freedom and the belief that all faiths should be able to gather and worship without fear of persecution or retribution. The NSGP and Pray Safe Act are essential tools to advance these protections, and we urge Congress to consider the requests outlined in the letter.
