For more than four decades, the National Association of Evangelicals has supported criminal justice reforms that promote fairness, proportionality and human dignity. We have also supported efforts that help returning citizens successfully rebuild their lives, including policies that remove barriers to stable housing. That commitment is why the NAE supports the Fair Future Act. 

Stable housing can be transformative for returning citizens seeking to reunite with their families and become active members of their communities. But currently, a small provision known as the Thurmond Amendment denies individuals with certain past drug distribution convictions the same housing protections available to nearly every other American. 

Alongside partners like Prison Fellowship, the National Association of Evangelicals supports the Fair Future Act (H.R. 7765), which would repeal this amendment, ensuring individuals with prior drug distribution convictions are treated like all other individuals with criminal records when it comes to housing protections.
