As part of the Word & Wisdom: Faith for an Ethical AI coalition, the National Association of Evangelicals joined other faith leaders in urging Congress to pass the bipartisan DEFIANCE Act. The legislation fills a critical gap in federal law by providing a civil remedy for victims of non-consensual, AI-generated sexually explicit material.

Rapid technological advancements have led to a surge in AI-generated “deepfakes” used to harass, extort and intimidate individuals, especially women and minors. These deepfakes cause severe psychological damage, yet survivors often lack clear legal recourse. Rooted in the conviction that every person possesses inherent worth and dignity, the letter to congressional leadership stresses that no one should have their image weaponized for sexual humiliation or coercion.

As AI technology advances, the NAE continues to advocate for guardrails that protect the dignity of humans made in God’s image. The DEFIANCE Act, which unanimously passed the U.S. Senate earlier this year, provides a targeted, survivor-centered solution by establishing a clear right for victims to pursue accountability through civil enforcement. We encourage lawmakers to prioritize swift consideration and passage of this important legislation.
