The incessant wildfires in southern California have caused tremendous destruction, leaving thousands without homes and many others reeling in the aftermath. Amidst of this devastation, California churches have stood as beacons of hope, embodying the truth that the Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.

In this video, NAE President Walter Kim talks with Mathew P. John, lead pastor of Lake Avenue Church in Pasadena, which has become a crucial hub for firefighters, survivors and recovery efforts. Pastor Mathew discusses how the church has been supporting the community through both civic and faith-based partnerships, what the long-term recovery might entail, and how people are processing the devastation.

Then, Bishop Kenneth Ulmer, longtime senior pastor of Faithful Central Church and president of The King’s University in Los Angeles, shares how the fires have impacted Black communities and churches. He reflects on how disasters often stir up and draw out faith in God as provider and sustainer. He also emphasizes the power of prayer and presence as some of the most impactful ways to support those in great grief (Job 2:13).

Both leaders ask Christians around the country to pray for those impacted by the fires:

  • For the physical rebuilding and the emotional and spiritual care of those affected;
  • That the Church would remain a faithful witness, both now and in the long-term;
  • For continued unity among churches to provide essential resources and aid; and
  • For the Church to embody the gospel with tenacity and hope.
