My name is Becky Shih Liu, and I am your immigrant neighbor. I was born in mainland China, and when I was a baby, my father, who worked for the National Party Navy, was ordered to leave China. We left Nanjing in the middle of the night and moved to Taiwan.
Growing up in Taiwan, my father started a church because we didn’t speak Taiwanese, and the existing churches spoke only Taiwanese. He started a Mandarin-speaking church in our backyard, so I grew up in the church environment.
In 1971, I immigrated to the U.S. I received a lot of help from people and churches, both Chinese and English-speaking, who helped me adjust to American life and learn the customs. I am deeply grateful for their support, which made my transition easier and taught me to care for others as they cared for me.
My Christian faith has taught me to love my neighbors as myself, following Jesus’ commandments to love God with all our hearts and to love our neighbors. As an immigrant, I understand the challenges of adapting to a new country. I see it as an opportunity to show God’s love and share the gospel with others who are new here, hoping they will find eternal life in Christ, just as I have.
