College campuses have long been places where a diversity of ideas, religions and identities can flourish. Yet increasingly, religious student groups have been denied the same freedoms that other student groups enjoy due to their religious convictions.

The National Association of Evangelicals is grateful for the work of Congresswoman Virginia Foxx and Congressman Tim Walberg to advance protection of religious student organizations in the Accreditation for College Excellence Act of 2023. If adopted by the Senate and signed by President Biden, the Equal Campus Access Act of 2023 would prohibit federally funded public colleges from excluding religious student organizations from their campuses due to their religious speech. This is especially important as it would allow faith-based student organizations to require that their leaders agree with their core religious beliefs, a freedom that has been denied to many groups in recent years.

Walter Kim, NAE president, joined a letter of support thanking Representatives Foxx and Walberg for their work protecting the freedom of all students to meet on their public college campuses according to their religious convictions.

The NAE has also joined amicus briefs in court cases seeking to uphold religious freedom for all students on public university campuses, including Christian Legal Society v. Newton, Alpha Delta Chi v. Reed, and Uzuegbunam v. Preczewski.
